Fuelling the T21 Metabolism: Guided Food Planning Beside Fitness

Exercise is only half of the equation. To build a lasting health routine, our physical workouts are paired with clear, structured nutrition guidance. Adults with Down syndrome have unique metabolic profiles. Because of this, standard commercial diets or generic calorie tracking systems rarely work. Our program includes specific food planning strategies designed to sync perfectly with the unique day-to-day physiological needs of the T21 community:

1. Navigating a Lower Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Individuals with Down syndrome typically have a lower resting metabolic rate. This is often caused by a lower percentage of lean muscle mass, combined with a high prevalence of hypothyroidism.

  • Our Guidance: Standard calorie counters often recommend targets that are too high, which can cause unintended weight gain. We provide conservative, realistic food guides tailored to this lower metabolic baseline, ensuring your loved one is fuelled for daily energy without overeating.

2. Supporting Gut Health & Comfort

The T21 community faces a significantly higher rate of gastrointestinal challenges, including celiac disease, food intolerances, and chronic constipation.

  • Our Guidance: We focus heavily on gut-friendly choices. Our guidance avoids rigid diets, instead showing you how to introduce high-fibre complex carbohydrates, gentle proteins, and easily digestible ingredients that minimise bloating and support healthy digestion.

3. Managing Sensory Food Selectivity

Many adults with additional needs experience sensory processing differences or food selectivity. They may strongly prefer certain food textures or reject specific food groups entirely.

  • Our Guidance: Forcing a strict meal plan never works, trust us we know! We have learnt the hard way so we have developed our app to include visual food-swap charts designed specifically for carers. If your daughter or son has an aversion to a specific food texture, the chart shows you exactly how to swap it for a different option that offers the same nutritional value but a more comfortable texture.

Trying new foods with Lauren has proven very difficult over the years but her level of nutritional understanding of what is good for her has developed over time. When shopping Lauren now checks every label, understands the 'Traffic Light' system and calorie's. Lauren is quite independent so if she wanders off in the supermarket we know where she will be, at the bakery or chocolate isle checking out calories!

By combining safe, neck-protected exercise with practical, metabolic-focused food guidance, we provide a complete, stress-free approach to health and weight management for adults with Down syndrome.
